‘Lady Cards advance to Final Four’

Witt’s goal rallies Verdigris past Sequoyah in 2 OT

SEQUOYAH — The No. 1-ranked Verdigris Lady Cardinals overcame the sleet and bitter cold weather to gut out a 3-2 win over No. 4 Claremore Sequoyah in double overtime of the Class 4A Regional Finals Thursday night at Claremore Sequoyah High School Stadium.

Summer Witt’s second goal of the game — an unassisted shot inside the penalty box — kept the Lady Cardinals on target toward unprecedented fifth consecutive berth in the state tournament.

Both teams battled tooth-and-nail for 80 minutes and the score tied at 2-2 after regulation. After a 10-minute overtime period that saw neither team get the ‘golden goal’ to secure victory, a second 10-minute period awaited.

The Lady Cardinals applied pressure and broke through with 5:19 remaining as Aly Walls sent a pass into the Sequoyah penalty box that Witt was able to control and push through for the game-winner.

Up until that moment, it was an all-out ‘tug-of-war’ between the Rogers County rivals.

Claremore Sequoyah drew first-blood early in the opening half on Tana Dake’s 25-yard rocket shot that soared over the grasp of Verdigris goalkeeper Jade Graves and put the Lady Eagles ahead, 1-0.

Verdigris knotted the game in the closing seconds of the first half as Witt took an assist from Caitlyn Hanslovan and punched in her first goal to even the halftime score at 1-1.

The see-saw battle swung back in favor of Sequoyah after the break with Teagan Moonen’s goal that put the Lady Eagles up 2-1.

Midway through the final 20 minutes, Hanslovan pushed the ball down the field, used some finesse and fancy footwork, and then ripped a 10-yard shot from the right sideline that caromed into the left side of the goal to once again tie the game at 2-2.

The win for Verdigris improved the Lady Cardinals to 11-3 on the year.

Verdigris will now face Harrah in the state semifinals on Tuesday at Harrah.

The Claremore Sequoyah Lady Eagles closed out their season with a 10-5 record.
