Not many teams in eastern Oklahoma have been able to shut down Verdigris forward Felipe Zanolli.
His slippery footwork off the dribble and strong left leg has turned the foreign exchange student from Brazil into a scoring machine.
Zanolli found a crease in Claremore’s defense late in the second half to score a pair of goals and push the Class 4A Cardinals past the Zebras, 2-0 Tuesday night at Verdigris High School Stadium.
Earlier in the week, Zanolli tallied two goals in the Cardinals’ 3-0 win over Miami.
Tuesday, though, proved to be a defensive battle between Rogers County rivals Claremore and Verdigris.
The Zebras controlled the first-half pressure with forward Gage Meisinger breaking free for several scoring opportunities before being tracked down Cardinal defenders — J.D. Hanslovan and Daniel Doshier.
The second-half, meanwhile, turned into the Zanolli show with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Zanolli’s first goal was set up by Dakota Brasher’s cross field pass that slipped past the Zebra goalkeeper Zane Greer.
Moments later, Zanolli cashed in the game-clincher with an unassisted goal that ripped through net with 2:05 remaining.
