SAC BASEBALL: RSU splits with Mid-America Christian

CLAREMORE — The Mid-America Christian baseball team stunned No. 6 Rogers State 2-1 in game one of the doubleheader before the Hillcats bounced back with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap at the Diamond Sports Complex on Thursday night.

In the opener, the Hillcats rallied to score one run in the seventh but left the tying run stranded on third base to end the game with a 2-1 loss. RSU registered a three-run first inning en route to a 7-1 victory in game two of the Sooner Athletic Conference series.

The Hillcats struggled to find an offensive rhythm, tallying just four hits in the game. The Diamond Cats squandered chances to score in three innings while the Evangels took advantage of their opportunities early in the contest.

RSU started the game with an error to start the inning, allowing the leadoff hitter to reach first base. The Evangels quickly loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Southpaw Shawn Spainhoward struck out the next batter but Kory Palmer put the Evangels on the board in the next at bat with a RBI fielder’s choice. Trent Daniels hit a RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it a 2-0 game.

In the bottom of the first frame, RSU left runners stranded on first and third. MACU pitcher Christian Hill shut down the Hillcat offense over the next five innings facing the minimum in each frame.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Colton Campbell started the rally with double to right-center field. Tyler Wheeler followed with a RBI double to left-center to cut the deficit to one run. Pinch hitter Brandon Bargas grounded out to move the tying run to third base but Emmanuel De La Cruz flew out to right field to end the game.

Spainhoward (4-3) was tagged with the loss as he gave up two unearned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Hill (1-6) earned the win as he allowed one run on four hits with three strike outs and one walk.

The Hillcats turned the momentum around in the nightcap as they took an early lead and never looked back. RSU dented the scoreboard in the first frame, using two hits to compile three runs. Hector Rivera drew a one out walk and Jose Olazagasti belted a double to left-center field to put runners on second and third. Colton Campbell ripped a double to deep left-center field to send both base runners home. Campbell advanced to third on a fly out by Wheeler and scored on the throw.

The Hillcats loaded the bases in the second frame and Olazagasti tallied a two-RBI single to right-center to give RSU a 5-0 lead.

In the fourth, Eric Baker led off the inning with a triple to left-center field and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Olazagasti.

MACU avoided the shutout as the Evangles tallied one run on two hits in the top of the fifth. Ramcy Lora rounded out the scoring in the contest with a leadoff home run blasted over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth.

Kyle Duncan (5-0) remained unbeaten on the season as he tallied the win for RSU. The senior right-handed pitcher allowed one run on six hits with two walks while fanning seven batters.

Rogers State (22-8, 7-3) will complete the four-game series against the Evangels on Saturday with a doubleheader at MACU. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
