YUKON — The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Oklahoma City Centennial Bison were too powerful for the No. 4-ranked Verdigris Cardinals. Thursday night in the state quarterfinals at Yukon High School.
Terry Davis tallied a game-high 19 points to lead the Bison past Verdigris, 61-48 and advance OKC Centennial to the semifinals against No. 3 Oklahoma City Millwood.
With the loss, the Cardinals ended their season with a 23-5 overall record.
Verdigris kept the game close in the first quarter and trailed 12-11. But a 19-6 run in the second quarter by OKC Centennial put the Bison up 31-17 at halftime.
Blake Battenfield scored 17 points in his final high school basketball game to lead the Cardinals, while sophomore point guard Cade Upshaw added 14.
The Cardinals managed to outscore OKC Centennial, 12-9, in the third quarter and narrowed the deficit to 40-29.
Verdigris senior forward Dakota Brasher joined in the scoring with eight points and senior guard Chase Bryant chipped in four. Junior guard Tyler Monroe followed with three points and senior forward Tyler Hundley added two to round out the Cardinals scoring.
Cornelius McKiver and Malcolm Mitchell keyed OKC Centennial's fourth quarter and finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Cory Morgan also contributed with 10 points.
The Bison outscored Verdigris, 21-19 in the final eight minutes.
In the other 3A state quarterfinal games, No. 8 Tahlequah Sequoyah held off No. Sperry, 73-65; No. 2 Okemah blew out Crooked Oak, 68-51; and No. 3 OKC Millwood got a gift from Hugo in a 38-37 win.
The 3A state semifinal match-ups include: No. 2 Okemah vs. No. 8 Tahlequah Sequoyah and No. 1 OKC Centennial vs. No. 3 OKC Millwood.
The 3A state championship will be at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City.
