The Class 3A No. 1-ranked Verdigris Cardinals soared through opening day of the Victory Christian Baseball Tournament behind senior ace pitcher Blake Battenfield.
After cruising past Victory Christian, 11-0 in the first of two games Friday afternoon, the highly-potent Cardinals rode the strong right arm of Battenfield to a 14-2 victory over Morris.
Battenfield notched his second win of the week, and the Cardinals improved to 16-1 on the season.
Coming out against Morris, Tanner Smith, Ryan Hurd, Kale Keith and Riley Keizor had multiple hits for the Cardinals.
The win over Morris advanced Verdigris to the championship Saturday night against Metro Christian or Holland Hall.
In the first game against Victory Christian, Hurd provided the hot bat for the Cardinals, tallying three hits.
Battenfield, Keith and Keizor also had one hit each to solidify the aggressive performance by the Cardinals’ offense.
J.W. Owens tossed four innings to pick up the win on the mound.
Since falling 7-6 to Shadow Ridge, Ariz., over Spring Break, the Cardinals have reeled off nine-straight victories.
Also, the Cardinals are an impressive 14-0 against teams from Oklahoma.
Battenfield and the Cardinals return to action on Monday in a big-time Rogers County showdown against Inola. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Verdigris High School Baseball Complex. The two teams will close out the series at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Inola.
