SAC WOMEN'S BB: Hampton records career double-double for No. 1 LCU

SHAWNEE — Nicole Hampton notched career highs in both points (29) and rebounds (14) to complete an impressive double-double and help lead No.1 Lubbock Christian University to an 87-60 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Oklahoma Baptist University in their first conference road game of the season.



LCU never trailed in the game and jumped out to a fast start by opening the game on an 11-4 run.  Hampton opened the game going 7-for-8 in the first half to lead all scorers with 20 points in the half, while Emily Atkins notched 15 points in the first half points.  LCU took advantage of 11 turnovers, held the Lady Bison to 35.5% (11/31) shooting from the field, and outrebounded them 23-15 in the first half.  The Lady Chaps shot 63.6% (21/33) from the field to lead 56-24 at the half.

 

Hampton opened the second half with a jumper for LCU and the Lady Chaps never let up for the remainder of the game. Atkins hit a jumper with 10:41 remaining in the second half to reach LCU's largest lead of the game at 33 points (71-38). LCU head coach Steve Gomez let the reserves play most of the later portions of the second half.



The Lady Chaps also received a career-high 15 points from Haley Fowler, who went 6-for-6 from the field. LCU finished the contest going 30-for-61 from the field (49.2%) while hitting 20-of-25 free-throws (80%). Bretlin Gabelmann led the Lady Bison with 17 points, while Charity Fowler pulled down nine rebounds. Gabelmann knocked down three of the Lady Bison's four three-point field goals, as they were a woeful 4-of-24 (16.7%) from long range. Atkins finished with 20 points to join LCU teammates Hampton and Fowler in double figures.



LCU improves to 15-0 with the win and they are 2-0 in the SAC, while OBU falls to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
