Comets scorch Zebras, 54-42

TULSA — Claremore’s losing streak stretched to 19-straight games Tuesday night following a 54-42 road loss to the Bishop Kelley Comets in Metro Lakes Conference play.

From the opening tip, the Comets were in control and enjoying a 22-4 lead over the Zebras in the first quarter.

Brett Russell and Truman Burrage scored the Zebras’ only two field goals of the first quarter.

Russell, though, helped rally the Zebras with 10 first-half points as Claremore trailed Bishop Kelley, 32-22 at halftime.

A three-pointer and two free throw conversions by Russell with 39 seconds in the opening half narrowed Bishop Kelley’s lead to 30-20.

Coming out in the third quarter, Russell and Darrius Murphy scored back-to-back baseline jumpers as Claremore trailed 34-26 with 2:57 remaining.

Bishop Kelley, though, answered with a strong interior offense and outscored the Zebras, 11-5 in the third quarter to go up 43-27.

Russell and Darrius Murphy tallied 22 and 12 points, respectively to lead the Zebras offense. Dontre Murphy also had three points, while Hunter Garroutte and Burrage had two. Daniel Lauer closed out the scoring with a point.

Matt Craig led the Comets with a team-high 13 points and Kevin Pynn had 10. Max Simpson also contributed with seven points.

Claremore (0-19 overall, 0-9 conference) returns to action at 8 p.m. on Friday at home against Collinsville.
