TAHLEQUAH — The Northeastern State women's soccer team opened its season with a 1-1 draw in exhibition play against Oklahoma Baptist Friday night at DeLoache Field.

NSU scored in the 31st minute of the first half on a strike from freshman midfielder Nea Sunila. The ball found her right in front of the box following a perfect cross on the right from sophomore midfielder McKenzie Musella.

The RiverHawks led the Lady Bisons until the last three minutes of the match, when OBU's Kenzi Brice touched one into the net to tie the game 1-1 following a defensive breakdown by NSU. No overtime was played due to the contest being an exhibition.

"Overall I thought we played pretty well. We only gave up a handful of shots," NSU Coach Chase Wooten said. "Our biggest defining moment was that we just didn't put away our shots. We had 35 shots and to come away with one goal is a little silly, we should have done better than that. We played a lot of new faces and our people have gotten better and are more comfortable in their situations. That is one goal we were able to accomplish tonight."

Northeastern State led Oklahoma Baptist in shots 35-5 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff saw 59 minutes of play for her first bout as a RiverHawk. She allowed no goals and was not forced to make a save. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Kloza subbed in during the 60th minute and finished the game with one goal allowed and one save.

The RiverHawks will open regular season play against nonconference opponent Augustana College at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at DeLoache Field.
