The University of Oklahoma unveiled its promotions schedule for the 2013 football season. Thanks to tremendous fan feedback and participation, “Stripe the Stadium” returns for a second campaign and will highlight the festivities surrounding OU’s Big 12 Conference opener against West Virginia on Sept. 7.
The season kicks off on Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe, which will be “Band and Spirit Day.” The 2013 home opener is slated to feature a flyover of vintage World War II-era aircraft during the national anthem. OU’s national merit scholars will also be recognized at this contest.
At halftime against Louisiana-Monroe, Coach Patty Gasso’s OU softball squad will be recognized for winning the 2013 NCAA and Big 12 championships, while the men’s gymnastics team will be honored during the game for claiming the MPSF title last season. In addition, Jep and Jessica Robertson from A&E’s hit TV series Duck Dynasty will be in attendance thanks to Hyster/Deep South Equipment and the OU IT Store.
For the Sept. 7 game against West Virginia, fans will once again be encouraged to “Stripe the Stadium” after Sooner fans pulled off the feat last season vs. Notre Dame. Fans who have tickets in even numbered seating sections should wear Crimson and fans in odd numbered seating sections should wear White. The general admission student section should all wear Crimson to this contest. Interested fans can purchase this season’s There’s Only One Oklahoma shirt and hat that come in both crimson and white at the OU Bookstore or online at shop.soonersports.com. In game, the football’s 2012 Big 12 championship will be celebrated. West Virginia’s band will also be visiting Norman for the contest.
The in-state matchup against Tulsa on Sept. 14 will be “Oklahoma Day” and will celebrate the state while featuring special presentations and recognition for individuals and organizations involved in disaster relief efforts following severe weather that impacted the state throughout the spring and summer. Also in attendance will be Tulsa’s band. The rowing team team’s first conference championship will be celebrated, as well.
Oklahoma’s matchup against TCU on Oct. 5 has been designated as “Champions Day,” and TCU’s band will be in town. The TCU contest is also scheduled to feature a pregame flyover of World War II aircraft. During the TCU game, a variety of champions from last season will be honored, including women’s gymnastics for its Big 12 championship and individual NCAA champions from track & field, wrestling and men’s gymnastics.
Homecoming has been scheduled for Oct. 26 against Texas Tech. The 2013 Big 12 champion baseball team and the program’s 1994 national championship team will be recognized. At halftime, the Alumni Band will perform.
The home finale vs. Iowa State on Nov. 16 is dubbed the “Heroes Game,” featuring military presentations and recognitions to honor the many individuals who have served and sacrificed for our nation. That contest will also serve as “Senior Day” when the departing class of OU Football student-athletes will be recognized for their contributions. Members of the men’s tennis team will be honored for their 2013 Big 12 championship. The family of the late Rod Shoate will be recognized for his recent selection to the College Football Hall of Fame.
