Ex-Hogs pitcher Astin signs with Brewers

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Former Arkansas right-handed pitcher Barrett Astin has signed a professional contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, as announced on Monday.

Astin was selected in the third round with the 90th overall pick by the Brewers last Saturday. He will start his professional career with the Brewers’ rookie league team in Helena, Mont. Astin was one of a school-record 11 Razorbacks selected in the 2013 MLB Draft. The 11 selections were also the most for any school in the 2013 draft.

A native of Forrest City, Ark., Astin pitched in 18 games, including 14 starts, during his junior season and finished the year with a 4-4 record, one save and a 1.79 ERA, which ranks as the ninth-lowest ERA in a season in school history. Astin finished the season ranked fifth in the SEC in ERA and 14th in innings pitched (90.2). In conference games only, Astin compiled a 3-3 record with a 2.14 ERA in 10 appearances, including nine starts. Astin was eighth in the SEC in ERA in conference games only and 11th with 51 strikeouts against league opponents.

Astin pitched in 77 games, including 20 as a starter, during his collegiate career and had a 12-11 record with 15 saves and a 2.11 ERA. He leaves the Razorback program ranked third in school history in career ERA, tied for second in career saves and fifth in career appearances. In 209 innings, Astin allowed 70 runs, 49 earned, on 188 hits and struck out 192 batters.
