RSU basketball advances to SAC Tourney Semifinals

Lady 'Cats face LCU at 1 p.m. today; Hillcats battle OCU at 8 p.m.

SHAWNEE — The Rogers State University men's and women's basketball teams advanced to Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals today at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.

The No. 14-ranked Lady 'Cats defeated Wayland Baptist University, 73-56 in their first-round game. Logan Froese and Sierra Cornwell tallied 17 points each to lead the Lady 'Cats offense.

With the win, the Lady 'Cats moved to the semifinals to face Lubbock Christian University at 1 p.m. today at OBU. LCU beat St. Gregory's in the first round matchup, and also are 1-1 this season against the Lady 'Cats.

On the men's side, the Hillcats rallied to a 87-83 win over Mid-America Christian University late Thursday night in the first-round of the SAC Tournament.

J.C. Hartzler, a freshman guard from Tulsa, converted a layup with 2:38 remaining to put the Hillcats up 79-78.

The win over MACU advances the Hillcats to the semifinals against Oklahoma City University at 8 p.m. tonight at OBU.

Robinson Opong led RSU with 23 points and Donald Williams added 20.

The winner of the RSU-LCU women's game will battle OCU-John Brown in the championship at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the RSU-OCU men's game will take on LCU-John Brown at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the championship.

    Claremore senior goalkeeper Sam Lillie made the most of his first and last varsity start Tuesday night against Skiatook on Senior Night at Lantow Field.
    For 40 minutes, Lillie was flawless in the goal, allowing only one goal and making several tenacious stops against the fiery Bulldogs.
    The second-half, however, told a different story as No. 3 Skiatook scored four goals and enjoyed a 5-0 win over the No. 15 Zebras.

  • Berryhill’s White strikes out 17, tosses no-hitter over No. 1 Verdigris

    Top-ranked Class 3A Verdigris got White-washed by 4A No.3 Berryhill on Tuesday night.
    In a battle of 2013 state champions, Chiefs’ ace Nick White — a future Oklahoma State pitcher —  fired a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts, igniting a 5-0 victory over the Cardinals.

  • BASEBALL: UT-Arlington tops Oklahoma, 6-5

    Oklahoma didn’t arrive at L. Dale Mitchell in a listless state on Tuesday. It knew the meeting with Texas-Arlington was important. Momentum needed to start heading in a positive direction.

    Then OU started hitting into double plays and it was all downhill from there in a 6-5 loss to the Mavericks.

  • NBA PLAYOFFS: DeRozan's 30 points lifts Raptors past Nets

    DeMar DeRozan put his playoff jitters aside and turned in an All-Star performance for the Toronto Raptors.
    DeRozan scored 30 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points and 14 rebounds and the Raptors beat the Brooklyn Nets 100-95 on Tuesday night, evening their first-round playoff series at one game apiece.

  • NBA PLAYOFFS: Wizards take 2-0 lead over Bulls

    This one looked like it was slipping away from the Washington Wizards. Then, in a flash everything changed.
    Bradley Beal came on strong late in regulation to finish with 26 points, Nene scored six of his 17 points in overtime and the Wizards beat the Chicago Bulls 101-99 Tuesday to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series. Game 3 is Friday at Washington.

  • NBA PLAYOFFS: Mavs need Nowitzki rebound to get even with Spurs

    Dirk Nowitzki missed from several of his usual spots as Dallas blew a lead in the fourth quarter of its playoff-opening loss to San Antonio.
    The Mavericks star even flubbed a glorified layup, the most surprising of all the misses when Dallas went without a meaningful basket for the final 8 minutes of the 90-85 loss to the Spurs.
