3A AREA TOURNEY: Adair stays unbeaten with win over Lady Cards

FORT GIBSON — The No. 4 Adair Lady Warriors continued their quest toward a perfect season Friday night with a 37-35 win over No. 5 Verdigris in the Class 3A Area Tournament at Fort Gibson High School.

With the win, Adair improved to 27-0 on the year and secured a berth in the state tournament later this week in Oklahoma City.

Verdigris, meanwhile, dropped to 23-4 and faced Eufaula Saturday night in the consolation finals with the winner going to state.

Baileigh O’Dell’s three-point attempt at the buzzer was partially blocked by Adair’s Bailey Stephens, giving the Lady Warriors’ a hard-fought win over the Lady Cardinals.

Adair’s Kylie Looney tallied a game-high 16 points and Kerr added seven.

Early in the first quarter, Stacia Payne rallied the Lady Cardinals from a 9-3 deficit with a pair of three-pointers and a driving layup as Verdigris knotted the game at 11-11.

The lead seesawed back-and-forth until Caitlyn Hanslovan’s layup and free throw put Verdigris ahead 18-15 with 3:08 left in the second quarter.

Looney buried a three-pointer with 1:19 left to once again knot the score at 18 and then Campos drained a trey to send Adair into the locker room with a 21-18 lead.

Payne and 6-foot-1 sophomore post Courtney Risenhoover combined for 13 of the Lady Cardinals’ 18 points in the first half.

Adair’s tenacity on defense held O’Dell in check for 32 minutes and seven points on the night.

Verdigris outscored Adair, 12-9 in the third quarter to knot the game at 30 with eight minutes left in regulation.

Looney’s short-range jumper with 6:12 remaining put Adair up 34-30 — their largest lead in the second half.

A three-pointer by Payne with 5:25 left cut the Adair lead to 34-33.

Looney’s presence in the fourth quarter, though, proved to be a difference as the Adair guard scored six points in a span of three minutes.

Payne led the Lady Cardinals with 11 points and Risenhoover added seven. Hanslovan also contributed with five points.

  • MLB: Rangers struggle in 9-3 loss to A's

A rough month didn't get any better for Texas on Sunday night, even though the game-time temperature of 100 degrees would have seemed to be in the Rangers' favor against Oakland.

However, they trailed 5-0 in the second inning en route to a 9-3 loss to the Athletics. Texas has lost 15 of its last 18 and dropped to 4-19 in July.

A lost Red Sox World Series ring is back on the finger of its owner, thanks to a nifty pickup by an ardent New York Yankees fan.

  • MLB: First-place Dodgers complete sweep of Giants

Manager Don Mattingly hardly considers a late-July sweep in San Francisco a turning point to put his Dodgers in the driver's seat atop the NL West.

Yet coming off consecutive series losses at St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Los Angeles needed some sort of spark as August approaches. The Dodgers found it in the ballpark of their biggest rival, and left the Bay Area in first place following an emphatic three-game swing.

Carl Crawford hit an RBI triple to back Hyun-Jin Ryu's third straight victory, and division-leading Los Angeles beat the Giants 4-3 Sunday night to establish some momentum behind their pitching and offense.
