CROSS COUNTRY: RSU finishes 3rd at Bison Invitational

SHAWNEE — The Rogers State men’s and women’s cross country teams each registered  third place finishes at the Bison Invitational on the Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech campus Saturday morning.

Sophomore Brenda Felipe led the Hillcats with an eighth place finish.  She ran the 5K race in 18:48. Christi Dougherty followed with a time of 19:10 in 12th place and Haley Taylor finished 16th in 19:20. Maria Apolinar ran the race in 20:07 to place 25th and Demi Mullin rounded out the top-five with a time of 22:35 in 52nd. The Hillcats garnered 112 points as Dougherty, Taylor and Mullin each ran a personal best.

OBU tallied 19 points as the Bison won the team title with all five of their runners finishing in the top 10.

The top five on the RSU men’s side each ran a personal best on Saturday. Brandon Payne led the Cats in the 8K race with an 18th place finish in 26:17. Oscar Reyes tallied a 27th place finish in 26:33. Garrett Dyson registered a personal best and program best by any RSU freshman with a time of 26:55 in 30th. Chandler Smith and Ryan Hayes rounded out the top five for RSU. Smith placed 32nd in 26: 57 and Hayes crossed the finish line in 27:26, placing 37th.

OBU recorded the team title with four of their five runners in the top 10.

Rogers State will return to action on October 13 as the Cats travel to the University of Arkansas for the Chile Pepper Invitational.

    None more important than Tuesday’s appearance in the Large School East-West All-State Game at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa.
    Skalnik, who was the lone senior this season for Verdigris and a four-time Class 3A state champion, thrived under pressure in the top of the third inning for the East.

  • BASEBALL: Larue, Skalnik power East to 3-0 victory

    The East blanked the West 3-0 in the Large School All-State Baseball Game Tuesday night at J. L. Johnson Stadium on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
    Claremore catcher Matt Whatley and third baseman Ryan Skalnik of Verdigris represented Rogers County in the contest.
    Skalnik finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI's.  Whatley was 0-for-1 with a walk.
