OSU softball splits with Arkansas

STILLWATER — Cowgirl shortstop Gessenia DeLaCruz had five RBIs in two games, including a three-run home run in the nightcap, as Oklahoma State's softball team split a doubleheader with the Arkansas Razorbacks, falling 8-5 in game one before winning the second, 6-1.

Junior pitcher Simone Freeman allowed just one run on two hits in the second game, going the distance and picking up her second win of the fall. The Australia native struck out five while walking two.

OSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second when Chelsea Ross reached on an error by Arkansas pitcher Kelly Young. Shannon Kaufman scored from third on the play, giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma State added a run in the second when DeLaCruz led off with an infield single and, two outs later, scored on a double to the wall off the bat of Ari Morrison.

After back-to-back singles by freshmen Tiffany Mikkelson and Chelsea Ross to lead off the third, DeLaCruz hit her second home run of the fall down the right-field line, giving OSU a 5-0 lead. The Razorbacks scored their lone run in the fourth on an RBI groundout, and the Cowgirls added another run in the fifth when senior Tamara Brown scored on a single by Kaufman.

In the first game of the day, Oklahoma State scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second, two on a double by DeLaCruz. UA's Jayme Gee led off the third with a solo homer, but the Cowgirls responded, scoring another unearned run on a single by Stephanie Brewer, a transfer from Arkansas.

The Razorbacks took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth, two on a single by Chloe Oprzedek and two more on a home run by Amanda Summerford. A bases-loaded fielder's choice put UA ahead 6-4 in the fifth, but OSU cut the lead in half on an RBI double by Brewer. However, a two-run homer by Arkansas' Devon Wallace gave the Razorbacks the win.

Oklahoma State (4-1) will host Eastern Oklahoma State in a 10-inning game on Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.

  • MLB: Rangers struggle in 9-3 loss to A's

A rough month didn't get any better for Texas on Sunday night, even though the game-time temperature of 100 degrees would have seemed to be in the Rangers' favor against Oakland.

However, they trailed 5-0 in the second inning en route to a 9-3 loss to the Athletics. Texas has lost 15 of its last 18 and dropped to 4-19 in July.

A lost Red Sox World Series ring is back on the finger of its owner, thanks to a nifty pickup by an ardent New York Yankees fan.

  • MLB: First-place Dodgers complete sweep of Giants

Manager Don Mattingly hardly considers a late-July sweep in San Francisco a turning point to put his Dodgers in the driver's seat atop the NL West.

Yet coming off consecutive series losses at St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Los Angeles needed some sort of spark as August approaches. The Dodgers found it in the ballpark of their biggest rival, and left the Bay Area in first place following an emphatic three-game swing.

Carl Crawford hit an RBI triple to back Hyun-Jin Ryu's third straight victory, and division-leading Los Angeles beat the Giants 4-3 Sunday night to establish some momentum behind their pitching and offense.
