Froese sparks Lady 'Cats past St. Gregory's, 75-68


SHAWNEE — The No. 13 Rogers State women’s basketball team registered its fifth Sooner Athletic Conference sweep on Wednesday night as the Hillcats tallied a 75-68 win over St. Gregory’s at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.

Logan Froese opened the second stanza with consecutive buckets to put the Hillcats in front by four. The lead seesawed over the first seven minutes of the second half but RSU took over for good with a 7-0 run capped off with a jumper by Froese, giving RSU a 52-46 lead. RSU took their largest lead of 11 points with less than seven minutes to play with a layup by Leah Smith. The Lady Cavaliers spent the final minutes chipping away at the deficit, cutting the lead to two points with two minutes to play thanks to Leticia Silva’s first triple of the game. Rician Walker hit a jumper to push the lead to four points and the Lady Cavs missed on their next trip down the court, forcing them to foul. Walker gave RSU a five point lead, making the backside of her free throws and Sierra got a steal with 20 seconds to play and was fouled. Cornwell made both her free shots to seal the win.

The Hillcats struggled to find a rhythm in the opening frame, trailing by as many as 11 points. With seven minutes to play, senior Ariani Silva ignited the Hillcats comeback as she drove through the lane and hit a layup to spark a 14-3 run. Sierra Cornwell hit a layup to knot the score 32-32 with 1:43 to play in the half. The teams traded buckets to end the half and the score was tied 34-34 at intermission.

Froese led the Cats with 19 points with 13 second half points. Smith rounded out the Hillcats in double digits scoring with 16 points. Cornwell finished with nine points and five steals.

Leticia Silva led all scorers with 26 points and Kalie Lucas registered 16 points for the Cavs.

Rogers State (22-7, 12-3) rounds out the regular season on Saturday as the Cats host No. 2 Oklahoma City at 3 p.m. RSU will celebrate its seniors between games as they play in their final game at the Claremore Expo. The game will be broadcast on the Hillcat Network at and on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
