Arkansas sprints past ORU, 80-57

Kevi Luper held to 10 points

TULSA — Sophomore forward Bernadett Balla scored a career high 26 points, but Oral Roberts University was beaten by Arkansas, 80-57, on Monday night at the Mabee Center. The loss drops ORU to 2-1 on the season.

Balla was 7-for-15 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free throw line. She matched her previous career high of 18 points in the first half alone, single-handedly keeping the Golden Eagles within striking distance.

Arkansas (3-0) was led by Quistelle Williams, who hit a career-high three three-point field goals and scored a team-high 17 points. Jhasmin Bowen added 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench.

ORU hit seven of their first 14 shots but finished the game at 33.3% (18-for-54) from the field. The Razorbacks shot 47.6% (30-for-63), including 50.0% (11-for-22) from three-point range.

Seniors Kevi Luper and Jaci Bigham scored 10 points each for ORU, with Bigham adding five assists.

The Golden Eagles held serve early in the game, leading the opening stages of the first half. A three-pointer by Bigham, her first of the year, gave the home team a 16-11 edge at the 14:39 mark of the first half.

But Arkansas scored 11 straight to surge aheadl, as an Erin Gatling three-ball put the Razorbacks up by a 22-16 count with 11:24 on the clock.

The Razorbacks took control by closing the half on a 14-4 run, giving them a 43-26 lead at the break. ORU missed 13 of their final 14 shots in the first half.

The visitors put the game away early in the second half with a 14-0 run. A Melissa Wolff jumper capped the spurt and gave Arkansas a 61-34 lead with 12:11 left to play.

The Arkansas lead would stay north of 20 points for the remainder of the game.

With the victory, Arkansas has now won 12 straight games against the Golden Eagles.

    The soccer duo will join seven other seniors on Friday night for Homecoming against Collinsville at Lantow Field.

    Claremore sophomore forward Bailey Steckline got the ‘hat-trick’ plus one Tuesday night in the Lady Zebras’ 10-0 win over Tulsa Memorial at  LaFortune Stadium.
    Steckline tallied two goals in the first half, and added two more in the second to complete her impressive night.

    On Tuesday, Whatley went 3-for-4 with two singles and a triple while sparking the Zebras to a 12-2 win over Tahlequah in five innings at American Legion Park.

    Class 4A third-ranked Dewey blanked homestanding Sequoyah 7-0 and 2-0 in a district doubleheader on Tuesday, improving to 21-3 with a dominating two-hit pitching performance in the opener and a four-hitter in the nightcap.

    Sequoyah boys soccer coach Bob Campbell had one phrase to sum up his feelings following the Eagles’ game with 15th ranked Catoosa at home Tuesday night.
    “We’re in the driver’s seat.’’
    Alex Bourgeois scored late in the first half and Sequoyah made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Indians in a showdown for the district lead.

  • Jackson sprints Zebras to 1st place at OBU Relays

    Claremore senior sprinter Tyler Jackson felt the need for speed Wednesday afternoon at the Oklahoma Baptist University High School Invitational.
    Jackson notched a pair of first-place victories in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash to help Claremore earn 130 points for top honors.

    The Rogers State University baseball team had a disappointing finish in its home finale as No. 12-ranked Arkansas Tech blanked the Hillcats 11-0 Tuesday evening in non-conference action from the Diamond Sports Complex.

  • BASEBALL: Southwest Baptist slips past NSU, 5-3

     The Northeastern State baseball team lost 5-3 to Southwest Baptist Thursday afternoon at Dobson Field.
    The RiverHawks (19-22, 15-18 MIAA) held a 3-0 lead early in the contest, but a late rally from the Bearcats (23-18, 19-13 MIAA) and costly errors from the visitors allowed the home team to secure the series-opening triumph.
