Arkansas' Anderson added to Golden Spikes Watch List

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas second baseman Brian Anderson has been named to the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award.



Anderson, who also earned second-team preseason All-America acclaim from Baseball America and Perfect Game, started 59 games last season and earned second-team All-SEC honors. He led the Razorbacks with a .325 batting average and also led the team with 47 runs scored, 68 hits, 12 doubles, five triples, 102 total bases, 41 walks, a .488 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .448. In addition, he tied for the team lead with four home runs and added 36 RBI. He ranked third in the SEC in walks, fourth in the conference in triples, fifth in on-base percentage and tied for 10th in runs scored. His three triples in conference play tied for the SEC lead, and he also ranked second with a .472 on-base percentage and third with a .581 slugging percentage against conference opponents.



In his career, the junior from Edmond, Okla., has appeared in 106 games with 92 starts and collected a .310 batting average with six home runs, 47 RBI, 70 runs scored, 16 doubles and five triples. His career on-base percentage is .429, and his slugging percentage is .444. He also has eight stolen bases on 12 attempts.



The Golden Spikes Award is presented by USA Baseball and sponsored by Major League Baseball. This year marks the 37th time the award will be presented to the top amateur player in the country. The semifinalists announcement is set for May 27. The semifinalists will be voted on by a group consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media, professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and previous winners of the award.



Fan voting will once again be part of the Golden Spikes Award. Once the semifinalists are announced, fans can vote for the finalists prior the announcement of finalists June 3. Fans can then vote for the winner among the group of finalists. The winner will be announced July 17.



The Arkansas baseball team opens its season this weekend at Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks host Appalachian State in a three-game weekend series with game times set for 3:05 p.m. Friday, 12:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
