BASEBALL: Zebras blast Pryor, 14-0

CLAREMORE — The Claremore Zebras needed only five innings to knock out the Pryor Tigers Thursday afternoon in non-conference play at Legion Field.

Claremore rode the hot hitting of senior shortstop T.J. Wood, and the crafty pitching of Cameron Smith for a 14-0 win over Pryor.

With the win, the Zebras improved to 11-5 on the season.

Claremore jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Smith driving in freshman outfielder Jeff Oxford on the RBI-single to right field.

Oxford reached first on a stand-up single to right field, and then advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on Bryce Howe’s sacrifice groundout.

Claremore continued to apply pressure in the bottom of the second with RBI-singles from Kyle Chancellor and Matt Whatley that extended the lead to 3-0.

After Pryor tallied its second hit — Nate Wolfe’s single down the third base line — in the top half of the third inning, Claremore exploded for eight runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the inning.

Wood’s lead-off double in the right-field corner off Pryor starting pitcher (Nate) Wolfe set the tone for the Zebras.

Dustin Weiesnbach plated Wood with an RBI-single to center field, and then scored on Whatley’s bases-loaded single to center field to make it 5-0.

Oxford continued his hot streak at the plate with an RBI-single to center field that scored Nick Dotson to increase the margin to 6-0.

A bases loaded walk to Howe and a passed ball allowed Chancellor and Whatley to race home for the 8-0 lead.

Smith’s 2-out sacrifice fly drove in Oxford for the 9-0 lead, and Weiesnbach and Dotson followed with RBI-singles to secure the 11-0 margin.

On the mound, Smith silenced Pryor with a three-hitter and a complete game victory.

The junior left-hander finished with four strikeouts and two walks allowed.

Claremore hosts Tulsa Memorial at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Legion Field.
