BASEBALL: Catoosa’s Brown holds off Ft. Gibson

CATOOSA — Nick Brown twirled a four-hitter and Catoosa held firm defensively with the game on the line, powering the Indians to a 4-3 victory over Fort Gibson Saturday on Senior Day.

Center fielder Bailey Meyer and right fielder Drake Nunley each slapped two hits in fifth-ranked Catoosa‘s 10-hit attack as Brown struck out 11 Tiger batters.

Fort Gibson started the sixth inning with two consecutive singles and the Indians’ lead appeared to be in jeopardy. Brown bore down and fanned the next three hitters, then the Tigers went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Catoosa scored in the first inning thanks to Meyer’s base knock and two Fort Gibson errors. Meyer stole second and took third on an overthrow. Hunter Kirkendoll’s grounder was thrown away at first, allowing Meyer to score.

Three hits led to two runs in the third and a 3-0 lead. Cory Balocca’s bloop single over the shortstop’s head drove home Corbin Osburn, who had walked, and pinch runner Hunter Whittle scored on Dustin Weaver’s hit

The home team added another run in the fourth on two hits and another Fort Gibson misplay. Meyer beat out a bunt for a single and reached third on a wild pick off throw by pitcher Boo Seward. Osburn knocked in Meyer with a base hit to right field.

The Tigers finally came to life in the fifth inning, loading the bases with two outs on two walks and a hit batter. Second baseman Josh Nunez ran home on Brown’s wild pitch and Seward drove in a pair with a single up the middle. Brown halted the Fort Gibson rally by striking out shortstop Bubba Stone.

Catoosa returns to play at 4 p.m. today at Cascia Hall.
