ORU baseball hosts No. 13 Oklahoma State

TULSA — Longtime Oral Roberts University in-state rival Oklahoma State makes its return to J.L. Johnson Stadium for the first time since 2002 as the Golden Eagles host the Cowboys at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Tulsa.

ORU (21-18) is fresh off its second Southland Conference series victory in as many weeks after taking two of the three from Houston Baptist over the weekend.

In the lone loss on Saturday in the series finale, the Golden Eagles trailed the Huskies 9-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning. A five-run inning, including a Jose Trevino three-run home run to tie the game, his seventh home run of the season, sent the game to extra innings.. The Golden Eagles lost the game 11-10 in 10 innings.

Tyler Boss continued his April tear at the plate as he went 7-10 during the series against Houston Baptist with a double and four RBI’s. Boss is 10th in the Southland with a .348 average this season.

OSU (29-11) entered its weekend Big 12 series ranked No. 13 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

The Cowboys swept Kansas in the three-game set, making it 10 wins in their last 12 contests.

The Cowboys are atop the Big 12 with 28 home runs this season, led by senior Tanne Krietemeier with seven, and followed by junior Zach Fish with six.

Fish has the top average on the Cowboy squad is hitting .324 with 12 doubles and 28 RBI’s, each team highs.

ORU and OSU reignited their all-time series last season with the Cowboys winning 4-2 at ONEOK Field in Downtown Tulsa. Trevino had an RBI double in the loss and Phillip Wilson pitched 2.2 scoreless innings on the mound.

The Cowboys lead the all-time series between the two programs, 33-28.

    None more important than Tuesday’s appearance in the Large School East-West All-State Game at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa.
    Skalnik, who was the lone senior this season for Verdigris and a four-time Class 3A state champion, thrived under pressure in the top of the third inning for the East.

  • BASEBALL: Larue, Skalnik power East to 3-0 victory

    The East blanked the West 3-0 in the Large School All-State Baseball Game Tuesday night at J. L. Johnson Stadium on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
    Claremore catcher Matt Whatley and third baseman Ryan Skalnik of Verdigris represented Rogers County in the contest.
    Skalnik finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI's.  Whatley was 0-for-1 with a walk.

  • MLB: Keuchel tosses 4-hitter, Astros roll past A's

    In at least one category, Dallas Keuchel is Clayton Kershaw's equal. For at least one three-game series, Houston was better than Oakland.

    Keuchel pitched a four-hitter and Robbie Grossman homered to cap a six-run first inning that sent the Astros past the Athletics 8-1 Wednesday.

  • MLB: Rangers edge Yankees for rare series win

    Texas Rangers starter Colby Lewis did a bit of reminiscing when he noticed the stands filling up while he warned up in the bullpen before the game.

    The veteran right-hander went out and provided a promising flashback performance against the New York Yankees, even after another leadoff homer by Brett Gardner. The Rangers clinched their first series in a month with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night.

  • MLB: Padres rip Cardinals with 12-run explosion

    Rookie Jesse Hahn gave himself a nice present on his 25th birthday and his teammates gave him far more run support than he needed.

    Hahn held St. Louis to one run and four hits in seven innings and Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable each homered and drove in four runs to lead the San Diego Padres to a 12-1 victory Wednesday night.

  • MLB: Cubs acquire Red Sox LHP Doubront

    Theo Epstein was the first person to take a chance on Felix Doubront. Now he is going to give the struggling left-hander another opportunity.

    The Chicago Cubs acquired Doubront from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday in exchange for a player to be named. Epstein, the president of baseball operations for the Cubs, was Boston's general manager when Doubront signed with the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent in 2005.

  • MLB: Kemp's RBI-single lifts Dodgers to 5th-straight win

    Matt Kemp has suddenly found his power, and it's helping keep the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the NL West.

    Kemp singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning after homering in consecutive games for the first time in over a year and the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 Wednesday night for their season-best fifth straight victory.

    The Oakland Athletics have traded left-hander Tommy Milone to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Sam Fuld.

    The A's announced the deal Thursday morning before the trade deadline.
