‘Road to State’

Playoff action begins tonight in Rogers County

CLAREMORE — The road to the state championship in soccer begins tonight for several Rogers County boys and girls teams.

The No. 2-ranked Claremore Lady Zerbas (10-1) kick off the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs at 6 p.m. tonight against the Tahlequah Lady Tigers at Lantow Field.

Claremore secured the playoff berth under veteran head coach Robin Sutherland with a 2-1 win over Skiatook in the Metro Lakes Conference championship game.

Claremore is led by four-year starting midfielder Katelin Teter and sophomore goalkeeper Brylee Brasher.

Brasher only allowed one goal in conference play; while Teter sparked an offense that outscored the league competition, 31-1.

The winner will face Pryor or Cascia Hall in the second-round on Friday at a time and place to be determined.

The three-time defending Class 4A state champion and No. 1-ranked Verdigris Lady Cardinals open first-round play at 5:30 p.m. tonight against Summit Christian at Randy Risenhoover Stadium.

Summit Christian advanced with a 3-2 win over Keys (Parkhill) in a play-in game last Friday.

Verdigris is led by senior forward Caitlyn Hanslovan, who is the two-time Class 4A State MVP, and senior sweeper Aubrey Lindsey.

The Catoosa Lady Indians will host Pawhuska at 6 p.m.; while the Catoosa Indians will visit the Verdigris Cardinals for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.

Also, the Oologah Mustangs will travel to Claremore Sequoyah to battle the Eagles at 5:30 p.m.

    For the second-straight year, the Claremore Zebra student training staff will be represented in the Oklahoma Coaches All-State games held in Tulsa.
    Meranda Golbek and Sarah Szcinski, a pair of 2014 Claremore High School graduates, earned All-State honors for their athletic training careers and will join two other student trainers from Jenks and Stillwater High School on the East squad.

    Rogers State Head Women's Basketball Coach Bobby Cope announced the six players that make up his first recruiting class heading into the 2014-15 season.

    Jordan Evans (Tulsa, Oklahoma), Amari Jones (Tulsa, Oklahoma), Jalissa Felici (Bellevue, Nebraska), and Taylor Koelsch (Owasso, Oklahoma) all join the Hillcats as transfers while Kelsy Byrd (Ketchum, Oklahoma) and Madison Dearmin (Balko, Oklahoma) come to RSU from the high school ranks.

  • Hog Call cheer earns national distinction

    Razorback fans will be Calling the Hogs, one of the nation's most unique and distinct collegiate cheers, with added pride this fall and into the future.  The University of Arkansas is believed to be the first college or university in the nation to receive a federal trademark registration for its college cheer as a sound mark from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Arkansas holds softball walk-on tryouts on Aug. 27

    University of Arkansas head coach Mike Larabee has announced a one day walk-on tryout for those interested in playing for the Razorback softball team. This will be the only tryout offered for the 2014-15 season. The tryout will take place Wednesday, August 27, at Bogle Park at 4 p.m. (CT).
