The final season in the Sooner Athletic Conference for the Rogers State University men’s and basketball teams tips off Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo Center.
RSU, who will leave the SAC for NCAA Division II play in 2014, hosts Mid-America Christian in the conference home opener.
The Lady ‘Cats battle MACU at 3 p.m., followed by the Hillcats at 5 p.m.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Roxanne Long, the Lady ‘Cats are 10-4 on the season and led by senior guard Leah Smith, who is averaging 12.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
Smith has started all 14 games for the Lady ‘Cats and has scored 173 total points.
Senior forward Logan Froese, a former Claremore Lady Zebra All-State standout, ranks second on the team with 144 total points for an average of 10.3 per game.
Froese has started 13 of the 14 games.
The Lady ‘Cats face a Mid-America Christian team that has a 10-2 record and is averaging 73.67 points per contest.
In the men’s game, the Hillcats (12-2) entertain a MACU squad that is 5-4 on the year and currently enjoying a one-game win streak.
Under the guidance of third-year head coach Justin Barkley, the Hillcats have five players averaging in double figures, led by senior forward Donald Williams with 18.1 points per game.
Kendrell Thompson is scoring 13.8 points, followed by Oral Roberts transfer Ken Holdman (12.9), Justynn Hammond (12.7) and Alex Ewings (11.3).
Williams, who is in his third year on the Hill after transferring to RSU from Ole Miss and Kentucky, leads the ‘Cats in three-point shooting with a .423 percentage (44-of-104).
Also, Williams has totaled 254 points in 13 of 14 starts this season.
As a team, the Hillcats are averaging 83.1 points per game; while holding opponents to 68 points.
The Hillcats are riding a two-game win streak with victories over Ecclesia and Mid-America Nazarene.
