SAC WOMEN'S BB: No. 1 LCU thumps St. Gregory's, 75-61

SHAWNEE — Despite suffering their worst shooting performance of the season, No.1 Lubbock Christian University received a 24-point and 10-rebound double-double performance from Nicole Hampton and LCU outscored Saint Gregory's University 26-3 at the free-throw line en route to a 75-61 Sooner Athletic Conference road win over the Lady Cavaliers Saturday afternoon.

With a very slow start to the game, the Lady Chaps were not able to score a field goal off their first seven attempts and SGU led 8-0 after five minutes. LCU scored their first point 4:44 into the game and battled back to eventually take its first lead (17-16) at the 9:55 mark on a Kelsey Hoppel jumper. Up 23-22 with eight minutes left, the Lady Chaps went on a 10-4 capped by a Courtney Wilson basket to take its largest lead of the half (33-26 with 5:04 remaining in the half). SGU shot 50% from the field in the first half, but the Lady Chaps were able to take advantage with 19 points off 15 SGU turnovers to lead at the half 37-31.

LCU led by as many as 15 in the second half, but the Cavs wouldn't go away. Leading 54-39 with 12:48 to play, SGU used a 13-4 run to cut LCU's lead to 58-52 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Lady Chaps then scored 17 of the game's next 22 points over a seven-minute span to build their lead back to 15. Hampton contributed 12 points and seven rebounds in the second half.

The double-double for Hampton was her eighth of the season and she has notched the task in two consecutive games. Kelsey Hoppel (15), Courtney Wilson (13) and Haley Burton (12) also scored in double digits in points for the Lady Chaps, as they were held to their worst shooting percentage of the season at 38% (23/60). SGU's Leticia Silva led all scorers with 25 points on a 10-of-13 shooting performance, but was the only Lady Cavs member in double digit scoring. SGU was plagued by 23 turnovers.
