Oklahoma City University's Teagan Franco posted a runner-up finish at 174 pounds in the Midland Warrior Open while seven other Stars earned third-place finishes Saturday at the Midland Events Center.
Kidd Gomez (125), Josh Stewart (149), Mark Meyer (157), Zach Skates (165), Cody Sivertsen (184), Michael Brown (197) and Stanley Lattimore (285) all finished third in their respective weight classes. Michael Stamp rounded out the Stars' top finishers with a fourth-place performance at 141.
Franco, a junior from Spanaway, Wash., pinned Asaiah Dyer of Midland (Neb.) in four minutes and three seconds in the quarterfinal match at 174. Franco picked up a 5-3 decision over Drake Fansau of Augustana (Ill.) in the semifinals before falling 6-3 to Micah Barnes of Nebraska in the finals.
At 125, Gomez lost early but rebounded with an 8-3 decision over teammate Jared Steinbach. The senior from Noble, Okla., picked up a 10-1 major decision and an 8-3 decision to make it to the third-place match. Gomez earned a 19-8 major decision over Morgan Engbrecht of Augustana for a third-place finish.
Stewart, a senior from Muskogee, Okla., pinned teammate Casey Powel, of Claremore,l and followed with a 2-0 decision over Dylan Kavanaugh of Briar Cliff (Iowa) to get to the third-place match at 149. Stewart pinned Dusty Paulson of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in 2:02 to finish in third-place.
Meyer, of Midwest City, Okla., pinned Eric Held of Wayne State (Mich.) and Kyle Gerlach of Dakota Wesleyan to move his OCU record for career pins to 63. The senior picked up a 4-1 decision over Gerlach to take third place at 157.
At 165, Skates, a freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., snagged major decisions over Kane Kelley of Nebraska-Kearney and Shawn Keating Midland and pinned Jay Holechek of Midland. Skates earned a 10-4 decision over Mitch Rechtzigel of Augustana to take third place.
Sivertsen, of Moore, Okla., pinned Matthew DeGamo of Wayne State and took a 9-1 major decision over teammate Landon Carter at 184. The sophomore pinned DeGamo again in the third-place match.
Brown, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., pinned Jade Hoisington of Dakota Wesleyan and defeated Wayne State's Jordan Watkins to move on to the third-place match. Brown downed John Sievert of Morningside (Iowa) 5-1 to finish third at 197.
Lattimore pinned Brian Ervin (Briar Cliff) and defeated Abram Reynolds (Briar Cliff), Eric Gruis (Dakota Wesleyan) and Shawn Meyer (Nebraska-Kearney). The senior from Athens, Ga., dropped Lonnie Brown of Midland 7-6 to earn a third-place finish at 285.
Stamp, a freshman from Norman, Okla., picked up a pair of victories by forfeit before falling 7-1 to Karl Bell of Dakota Wesleyan in the third-place match at 141.
The Stars will return to action in the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 12-13 in Springfield, Ill.
