SPERRY — The Verdigris Cardinals had a chip on their shoulder Friday night in Sperry.

After falling to the Pirates, 67-64, earlier in the season at the Jack Collins Fieldhouse in Verdigris, the Cardinals wouldn’t be denied in the second meeting between the two arch-rivals.

Senior forward Blake Battenfield poured in a game-high 20 points as the Class 3A No. 5 Cardinals picked up a 57-48 victory over the Pirates.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 16-4 overall on the season.

Sperry, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, dropped to 17-3 on the year.

From the opening tip, the Cardinals looked to be on top of their game.

Battenfield — along with senior guard Chase Bryant and sophomore point guard Cade Upshaw — helped put the Cardinals up 21-13 after the first quarter.

While Battenfield dominated the inside, Bryant and Upshaw generated offense on the perimeter.

Bryant and Upshaw joined Battenfield in double-figures with 12 points each.

The Cardinals’ lead grew to 33-29 at halftime.

Sperry rallied with a 16-12 outburst in the second quarter to cut the deficit to four points at the end of the first 16 minutes.

Cole led the Pirates with 19 points and Mullins followed with 13.

The Pirates stayed on the heels of the Cardinals in the third quarter and narrowed the gap to 41-40.

But, the Cardinals raised their intensity in the final quarter to outscore Sperry, 16-8, and pull off the win.

Tyler Monroe and Tyler Hundley also contributed with seven and six points, respectively for the Cardinals.

Lady Cards 59, Sperry 29

Stacia Payne and Baileigh O’Dell combined for 26 points and the Class 3A No. 5 Lady Cardinals rolled to a 59-29 win over the Lady Pirates.

Payne, who led the Lady Cardinals with a game-high 16 points, sparked the Verdigris offense to a 24-4 lead in the first quarter.

O’Dell poured in 10 points and the Lady Cardinals led 45-12 at halftime.

The win over Sperry improved the Lady Cardinals to 17-3 on the season.

Sperry dropped to 9-10 with the loss.

Along with Payne and O’Dell, the Lady Cardinals were led in scoring by Caitlyn Hanslovan and Courtney Risenhoover with eight points each, Camry Collins with six, Ali Turner and Taylor Beck with four, and Kylee Barbee with a three pointer.
