VERDIGRIS — It may have been Senior Night, but the Verdigris Lady Cardinals turned to a sophomore to lead them.

Courtney Risenhoover, a 5-foot-9 post player, roamed free inside en route to 23 points, powering the Class 3A No. 5 Lady Cardinals to a 62-50 victory over No. 16 4A Berryhill Tuesday night at Jack Collins Fieldhouse.

Risenhoover added 10 rebounds to her stat sheet as Verdigris moved to 20-3 for the year.

Stacia Payne tossed in 15 points with Caitlyn Hanslovan coming off the bench for 10.

Berryhill shot 58 percent from the field, hitting 8-of-13 from three-point territory, but committed 24 turnovers to just five for the Cardinals.

With Risenhoover enjoying a monster game inside, Verdigris led 27-26 at intermission in a contest that ended with 15 lead changes.

Risenhoover hit a turnaround bucket with 20 seconds left in the third quarter to give her Cards a 44-42 edge and they never trailed again.

The Maidens (16-7) used treys to remain within striking distance in the final period until Risenhoover received a pass from Baileigh O’Dell and converted another turnaround jumper in the lane to make it 52-48 with 3:56 to go.

The crusher for Berryhill came when Hanslovan laced a three-ball from the corner with 2:03 remaining, putting Verdigris ahead 58-50.

Cardinals 63, Berryhill 60 (OT)

Berryhill suffered an offensive meltdown in the fourth quarter and overtime, allowing the Verdigris Cardinals to escape with a 63-60 victory on Senior Night.

The Class 4A No. 14 Chiefs entered the final period shooting 65 percent, but made just four more field goals in the concluding 12 minutes as the Class 3A Cardinals improved to 19-4 in their final home game.

Verdigris could not be sure of victory until Berryhill guard Brody Mayberry was called for traveling with 2.4 seconds left in OT.

The Chiefs led 59-57 just 24 seconds in the extra period after Chandler Moczygemba hit a shot from the left wing.  Senior Blake Battenfield, who collected 24 points, tied the score after muscling underneath for a hoop.

Chase Bryant later added a free throw and Cade Upshaw drove the baseline for a score that made it 62-59.

With 1:08 remaining, Moczygemba, who topped Berryhill with 25 points, connected on just one of two foul shots as Verdigris protected a 62-60 lead.
