SOFTBALL: RSU drops pair in SAC Tournament

(Continued)

OKLAHOMA CITY — The St. Gregory’s Cavaliers responded with back-to-back doubles to lead off the home half. Melanie Gladden’s double scored Allison Conyers and Gladden scored from third on a two out single by Caitlin O’Hagan as SGU took the 2-1 lead.

In the third frame the Hillcats tallied a pair of runs the first coming on a single by Candace Monigold. The RBI single tied the contest and tied Monigold with Brittany White (2010) for the school record for hits in a single season at 73.

Taran Threet reached on a fielder’s choice blooper to shallow left-center field that scored Simpson from third as RSU regained the lead at 3-2.

The Hillcats added insurance runs in the fifth as senior Katrina Loy led off the inning with a pinch hit single up the middle. Toni Shurtliff re-entered at first base to run and scored on an error by the Cavs left fielder after a single by Jamie King moved Shurtliff to third. Simpson doubled to left field scoring King and the Hillcats stretched the advantage to 5-2.

Hillcat pitcher Linsey Curtis was able to force a ground out to begin the bottom of the fifth inning but a double by Whitney Anderson was followed two batters later with a two-run, home run to left field by Tara Nall as the Cavs trimmed the Cats lead to just one run.

SGU held the Hillcats scoreless in the top of the sixth before the 14th-ranked Cavaliers totaled five runs in the home half of the inning. RSU was able to load the bases in the seventh inning with just one out but back-to-back fly-outs ended the game and the SAC campaign for the Hillcats.

Jamie King and Cailin Simpson combined to go 5-for-7 at the plate with one RBI while Candace Monigold tallied a pair of RBI as she went 1-for-3 at the dish with a walk.
