Blake Battenfield tossed a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead the No. 1-ranked Verdigris Cardinals past Oklahoma Christian, 3-0 Thursday morning in the Class 3A State Quarterfinals at Edmond Deer Creek High School.
Battenfield and the Cardinals advanced to the state semifinals for the third-straight year and faced Spiro for a trip to the state championship game on Saturday. A win over Spiro and the Cardinals keep their chances at a three-peat in tact. The Class 3A State Finals will be at noon on Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe.
Both teams went toe-to-toe early on Thursday as Verdigris carried a 1-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning.
Battenfield, who is already signed to play at Oklahoma State University in 2013-14, held the Oklahoma Christian lineup in check throughout the game.
Verdigris (30-2) got the big blow in the fifth inning as junior third baseman Ryan Skalnik delivered a two-run homer over the left-center field wall to put the Cardinals ahead 3-0.
Oklahoma Christian tallied two hits off Battenfield and only had four runners reach base.
Spiro defeated Salina, 5-4 in the other 3A quarterfinal to advance to Friday’s state semifinals.
