‘Next in Command’

Sequoyah’s Sandecki takes snaps for injured QB Moniz

SEQUOYAH — Throughout 7-on-7 Passing League, Claremore Sequoyah senior Daniel Moniz encouraged his friend and fellow quarterback Benny Sandecki with positive words of wisdom.

Moniz, who is Sequoyah’s returning starting quarterback, injured his left knee during a team camp in late spring and has been sidelined from competition.

In his absence, though, Sandecki has picked up the slack and improved with each snap taken during passing drills the past four weeks at Lantow Field.

During those passing drills, Sandecki and freshman quarterback Johnny Pryor have been able to polish up their timing with wide receivers Doug Radley, Kyle Cutsinger and Josh Choate, as well as running back Garrett Shepherd.

Sandecki, who is 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, will make his first varsity start for the Eagles in 52 days when Sequoyah travels to Keys on Sept. 6.

Moniz is expected to miss the first three games, but hopefully return by Sept. 27 when Sequoyah battles Sperry for Homecoming.

Last year, Moniz — in his first year as the Sequoyah starting quarterback — led the Eagles to the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior signal-caller proved to be a dual-threat for the Eagles’ offense. Moniz completed 103-of-194 passes for 1,488 yards and 12 touchdowns; and also rushed for 1,571 yards and 19 touchdowns.

“Daniel (Moniz) gives us a weapon on offense with his speed and strong arm,” Claremore Sequoyah head coach Jody Iams said in a previous article. “He also is our leader on defense at the free safety position.”
