MOBILE, Ala. — Despite trailing 9-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Rams battled, tallying five runs on five hits with the help of one RSU error in the inning. With the tying run at the plate, RSU pitcher Laura Fleck was able to get the strikeout to secure the win.
Fleck tossed the complete game, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 13 hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Hillcats grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a RBI groundout by Taran Threet. The lead was short–lived as the Hillcats gave up the equalizer on an error in the bottom half of the inning.
The Rams used a big second inning to their advantage. Mobile plated seven runs on eight hits in the innings to take an 8-1 lead.
Despite holding the Rams scoreless over the next three innings, the Hillcats couldn’t get anything going on offense. The Hillcats left six runners stranded in the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth frame.
RSU was one out away from avoiding the run-rule in the bottom of the sixth. With bases loaded and one out, Allie Luster popped out to the infield to give RSU two outs. Vickery singled up the middle, Taran Threet fielded the ball but was unable to touch second base in time and a run scored to end the game early.
Fleck (21-1) suffered her first loss of the season. The southpaw tossed 5.2 innings and allowed nine runs, eight earned, while issuing one walk.
Rogers State (30-1) returns to action at the Diamond Sports Complex on Tuesday evening with a doubleheader against Oklahoma Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com.
