WNIT: Tulane eliminates Arkansas, 60-48

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Senior Sarah Watkins had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds but it was not enough as the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team suffered a 60-48 loss in the second round of the WNIT to end the season.

“It was a tough way to go out for our seniors,” Arkansas head coach Tom Collen said.  “We just didn’t play our best basketball today.  I can’t say enough about our seniors and what they meant to the program.”

Fast paced tempo was the name of the game in the first 10 plus minutes of the game as the teams traded baskets.  Arkansas shot well in the early minutes but Tulane came out on fire shooting 57.1 percent on 8-for-14 through the second media timeout and held a slim, 17-20 lead over the Razorbacks.

The Green Wave kept up the hot shooting while Arkansas went cold allowing Tulane to stretch the lead as the half wore on.  Tulane had a size advantage inside and the rebounds began to add up with Arkansas struggling to get second looks after missed shots.

Arkansas suffered through an 0-for-4 streak while the Green Wave went on an 8-0 taking as 12 point lead with just over two minutes to play in the first half.  The physical contest came to a close at the half with Tulane up 22-36, shooting 56 percent from the half on 14-for-35 from the floor.

The Razorbacks shot just over 29 percent hitting 7-of-24 in the frame.

Arkansas’ offense continued to struggle in the second half but the picked up the defensive intensity trying to scratch back into the game.

The Razorbacks changed defenses and tried pressing the Green Wave but couldn’t bring the gap into single digits as the shots just wouldn’t ball on the offensive side of the ball.

But Arkansas pressed on finally getting the gap to single digits, 41-50, at the 2:35 mark after an 8-3 run that ate up 2:49 on the clock.
