Diamond 'Cats split with No. 1 OCU on Senior Night

CLAREMORE — The No.23-ranked Rogers State baseball team stunned No.1 Oklahoma City in the opening game of the doubleheader before falling in the nightcap at the Diamond Sports Complex on Thursday.

The Hillcats opened their final regular season home twin bill on the right foot as they used six hits and capitalized on three OCU errors to post a 6-4 victory over the top-ranked Stars on senior night. OCU bounced back in game two as they were fueled by right-handed pitcher Cody Crabaugh who allowed RSU just one hit.  The Stars went on to compile eight hits en route to a 7-1 win.

GAME ONE

Senior southpaw Shawn Spainhoward faced the minimum in the top of the first frame and the offense produced a run in the bottom of the inning. The Stars opened the bottom of the first with an error by the second baseman that put leadoff hitter Eric Baker on second base. Hector Rivera moved Baker to third with a sacrifice bunt and Jose Olazagasti drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Stars took the lead in the top of the second as they used five hits to tally three runs. The Hillcats battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. RSU loaded the bases to start the inning and Keith Poverud laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt, allowing Tyler Wheeler to score. Jean-Francois Dumais-Fyfe scored on a wild pitch to knot the score.

Chase Jensen doubled to left-center field and scored on a RBI single up the middle by Forrest Smith, giving the Stars a one-run lead.

RSU regained the advantage for good in the sixth. Wheeler ignited the rally with a one out double down the left field line.  Cody Campbell followed with a single to send pinch runner Alex Cochran to third. Brandon Bargas hit a sacrifice squeeze bunt down the first base line to send Cochran home and Emmanuel De La Cruz belted a single to center to allow pinch runner Hamilton Hernandez to score. With the bases loaded, RSU scored the final run of the game with a full-count walk by Rivera.

Spainhoward (7-4) registered the complete-game win for the Hillcats. He allowed four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Derek Howell (9-2) was tagged with the loss as he six runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts.

Cody Campbell and De La Cruz led the Cats with two hits apiece.

Game Two

The Stars climbed into the lead in the nightcap with one run in four of the first five innings.

RSU cut the deficit to 4-1 and tallied its lone hit in the fifth frame. Ramcy Lora was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Dumais-Fyfe came in to run for him. Blake Heston belted a single through the right side of the infield to but Dumais-Fyfe on third and he scored with a sacrifice fly by Bargas.

The Stars plated three runs on three hits to put the game away in the top of the sixth.

Kyle Duncan (6-3) was tagged with the loss as he tossed four innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts.
