VERDIGRIS — The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals remain on path for another trip to the state tournament.

On Friday, Verdigris senior pitcher Blake Battenfield tossed a one-hitter to lead the No. 1-ranked Cardinals past Adair, 15-0 in the regional tournament opener at Verdigris Baseball Complex.

The Cardinals took a commanding 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back.

Tanner Smith ripped a three-run triple to energize the Cardinals’ offense.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 26-2 on the season.

In the night-cap Friday, Mitch Hammack led the Cardinals to an 11-5 win over Perkins-Tryon.

The victory moved the Cardinals one step closer to state and extended their season record to 27-2.

Verdigris resumed regional tournament action at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Owasso's Stigall Field.

The Cardinals faced the winner of the Pawhuska-Perkins-Tryon game in the night cap.

A win in that game secures the Cardinals a berth in the Class 3A State Tournament later this week in Edmond.

Note: Saturday’s 3A regional tournament recap will be in Tuesday’s paper.
