Referees stop Lake Eufaula Classic with South on top

EUFAULA —  It was an outcome unlike any in the 29 years of the Lake Eufaula Classic, and a bruise different than any player has ever departed with.

Officials, following the second serious skirmish of the game, walked off the field and the game was called, the South leading the North 12-10 at Paul Bell Stadium.

The score will not be official. The black eye to the game will linger.

At least three players, two from the South, were ejected before two fights broke out with 6:41 to go in the third quarter. None of the Phoenix-area kids were among the ejections, but the first boot came on a unsportsmanlike conduct call on the South on contact after the play on North quarterback Trevor Jiles of Muskogee. Due to some roster mix-ups on the South, that player was not identified.

“They (the officials) came up to me and said they couldn’t control the game,” Eufaula coach Larry Newton, whose school hosted the game for graduating seniors. “But it was that way from the start I thought.

“We’ve got to come up with some better guidelines for this game. They don’t have any way to suspend them for two games like they would in the regular season. I know we can take that jersey away and maybe some other stuff.”

It spoiled what had been a good game for some area players.

Jiles, entering on the third series of the game, promptly drove the North 55 yards in 8 plays, overcoming a 15-yard penalty on his squad to connect with Checotah’s Denver Berry for 24 yards and another of 30 yards to Eufaula’s Cody Faries. On the very next play, Jiles kept for 3 yards and the touchdown with 10:48 left until halftime. He was 3-of-4 for 57 yards rotating with Checotah’s Tyler Addy.

Addy got the North set up for its next score, a 40-yard field goal by Muskogee kicker Preston Soper.
