WICHITA, Kan. — A solo home run in the sixth inning by the Lady Jets broke a 5-5 tie as the Rogers State softball team dropped the rubber game, 6-5 at Newman Saturday in Heartland Conference play.

Four players for the Hillcats recorded at least two hits as they out-hit the Lady Jets 13-9 but could not break through for the series win on the road.

RSU struck early posting four runs in the second inning, getting a lead-off single from Taran Threet. After a sacrifice bunt by Carley Conley and a single from Yolanda Rios, Jackie Flores delivered an RBI single plating the first run of the ballgame chasing Newman starting pitcher Taylor Parsons.

The frame continued as the Hillcats added a single by Makenzie Kirk, loading the bases before Jamie Kowalick stepped up with two outs. The sophomore cleared the bases behind a single moving RSU in front, 4-0.

Newman got one run back in the third tallying an unearned run on Hillcat starter Rios before a two-run home run by Sarah Morales gave the Lady Jets a 5-4 lead in the fourth.

RSU rallied to even the score, 5-5, as Cailin Simpson opened the top of the fifth with a single. Simpson moved to third where Conley came through with a clutch, two-out double tying the game for the Hillcats.

The Lady Jets broke the tie in the sixth as Kassidy Furr belted a home run to center and reliever Jensen Cromer got a game-ending double play preserving the victory for Newman on its Senior Day, 6-5.

The Hillcats registered back-to-back, one-out singles in the inning moving the tying run to scoring position before the Lady Jets kept RSU from extending the game to claim the series.

Kowalick led the offense with three RBIs on two hits while Candace Monigold, Threet, and Flores each added two hits. Rios took the loss in the circle for the Hillcats allowing six runs, four unearned, on nine hits during the complete game.

Rogers State (13-26, 5-13 HC) returns to the diamond Tuesday with a road non-conference doubleheader at East Central. The twin bill is scheduled for 2 p.m.
