SOFTBALL: Ex-Verdigris standout LaValley sparks NEO to split decision

JOPLIN, Mo. — Prior to entering the weekend Crowder College Bash at the Joplin Athletic Complex, the No. 22 ranked Northeastern A&M Lady Norse split a double-header Friday with Southeastern Iowa Community College on the NEO diamond.

The Lady Blackhawks (1-5) scored a run in the top of the eighth inning for a 5-4 victory in the first game before the Lady Norse (15-5) posted an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Jocelyn Diaz singled to start the top of the eighth inning for the Blackhawks. Ashlee Amador singled sending Diaz to third. Diaz scored on an overthrow at third base to create a 5-4 lead.

Two pop flys and a ground out ended NEO's bottom of the eighth.

A triple to left by Diaz and a RBI single by Cecilia Alverez started a three-run third inning for Southeast Iowa. After Fabiana Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice and Chelsey Banks walked, both runner's scored on a fielding error by Megan Higgins at third base.

NEO responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a single by Lexie LaValley, an RBI triple by Courtni Clark and an RBI single by Higgins.

After the Blackhawks added a run in the top of the sixth inning, NEO rallied with two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame.

Alex Riley led the 12-hit Lady Norse attack with three singles while Higgins, Clark, Donothan and Wofford added two hits each.

Against Southeastern Iowa in the first game, freshman Kailin Davis scattered seven hits to lead the Lady Norse to an 8-0 shutout. Davis struck out three without allowing a walk in seven innings.

Clark turned in a torrid performance at the plate with two doubles and a single and five runs batted in on three at-bats.

Last Thursday the Lady Norse traveled to Wilburton for an Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference double-header with Eastern State College (12-17 and 3-5). The Lady Norse remained undefeated (6-0) in conference play with an 11-9 and 5-0 sweep of the Lady Mountaineers.

Trailing by a 9-5 margin heading into the top of the seventh inning of the first game at Eastern, the Lady Norse received back-to-back doubles by Clark and LaValley along with an RBI single by Higgins sparked a six-run rally by NEO.

Three doubles by LaValley along with two by Clark and one each by Walters and Maddie Stevenson ignited the 12-hit Lady Norse offense. Wofford added a two-run homer and three RBI.

Davis limited the Lady Mountaineers to one hit as NEO cruised to a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap. She recorded 10 strikeouts without allowing a walk.

Donathon and Clark delivered three hits each to lead the 12-hit NEO offense. Walters produced a solo homerun while the Lady Norse added six doubles.
