SOFTBALL: No. 4 RSU sweeps Bryan College


DAYTON, Tenn. — The No. 4 ranked Rogers State softball team pushed its win streak to 29 games on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Bryan College (Tenn.) at Lion Field.

Junior Candace Monigold opened game one with a two-run home run in the first frame as RSU belted 12 hits en route to a 10-2 run-rule victory in six innings. In the nightcap, RSU fell behind 1-0 in the second frame but tallied seven runs in the fifth and earned a 9-6 win.


Cailin Simpson tallied a one out single through the left side of the infield to start the inning. Monigold followed and crushed a two-run home run over the right field fence to give RSU the lead. The Lions answered in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs to tie the game with a two RBI triple off the right field wall by Rachel Kirby.

In the top of the second, Ashlie Fauchier led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. Jamie King drove her in with a RBI single to give the Hillcats a 3-2 lead.

The Hillcats gave themselves some breathing room in the fifth as they tallied five runs. Monigold led off the inning with a triple and Taran Threet drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Shona Guerrero followed with a RBI single to shallow centerfield. Shelby Brogdon registered  a walk to load the bases for Linsey Curtis who hit a fielder’s choice to score a run. Fauchier ripped a RBI double down the left field line and King rounded out the scoring with a two RBI single through the right side of the infield, giving RSU an 8-2 advantage.

The Hillcats added two runs in the sixth with a RBI double by Guerrero and a RBI groundout by Threet.

Laura Fleck faced the minimum in the sixth to secure the short-game win. The sophomore from Muskogee, Okla. registered the complete game win in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.


The Hillcats had to register a come-from-behind victory in the finale as the Lions dented the scoreboard first in game two.

Jill Davis opened the second inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Daniel. She reached third on a single by Taylor Yates and scored on a ground out by Kamron Adkins.

After two scoreless innings, RSU posted a seven run fifth frame to take the lead. RSU tallied seven hits in the inning. Threet tallied a RBI single down the left field line, Curtis slapped a two RBI single up the middle, Desiree Ayarzagoitia smashed a two RBI doubled to deep left-center field, Keck hit a RBI single to right-center field while Fauchier rounded out the scoring with a double to shallow right field.

The Lions chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the inning with a two RBI double off the wall in right- center field fence by Davis.

RSU added one run in each of the last two innings to take a 9-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Curtis came in to pitch for RSU and stuck out the first batter before she ran into some trouble. Christine Davis doubled and scored on a single by Kirby. Jill Davis belted a RBI double to deep left-center field, forcing the Hillcat to bring Fleck back into the game. The Southpaw closed out the inning and secured the RSU win.

Fleck registered the win and the save, allowing three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.
