SOFTBALL: OSU faces North Texas in Denton


DENTON — The Oklahoma State softball team returns to action Wednesday, March 12, when the Cowgirls travel to Denton, Texas, to play North Texas in a midweek matchup beginning at 6 p.m.

OSU (15-8) is coming off a 3-1 weekend, including a 5-4 upset of No. 17 Minnesota.

The Cowgirls are 12-4 all-time against the Mean Green. Last year, OSU split the season series, beating North Texas 8-0 in Denton on Feb. 15, then falling to UNT in Stillwater by the score of 4-3.

Offensively, Shelby Davis continues to lead the Cowgirls in batting average (.412), at bats (85), hits (35), total bases (38) and on-base percentage (.451). Tiffany Mikkelson leads the team in doubles (five), runs batted in (12) and walks (14). Tarah Ettinger leads OSU in home runs (four) and slugging percentage (.536), while Ari Morrison leads the squad with 20 runs scored. Overall, the Cowgirls are hitting .301 as a team.

In the circle, Simone Freeman (11-3) has a 1.33 earned run average. She's started 14 games and has made a total of 17 appearances, registering 10 complete games and four shutouts. In 95 innings, she's given up 23 runs and struck out 139. Whitney Whitehorn (4-4) sports a 2.26 ERA in nine starts. In 40.1 innings, she's allowed 20 runs and struck out 20 batters.

A number of Cowgirls continue to hold spots in the Big 12 rankings. Davis is third in hits and stolen bases (18), and ninth in batting average. Mikkelson ranks third in walks, fourth in RBIs and eighth in doubles. Ettinger is eighth in walks with 13, while Morrison is eighth in runs scored.


Freeman is first in the conference in strikeouts and opponent batting average (.152). She is second in wins and shutouts, and third in saves (one), complete games, games started, appearances and innings pitched. Freeman also ranks fourth in overall ERA.

Nationally, Freeman leads the country in total strikeouts with 139, while Davis ranks 14th in stolen bases.
