SOCCER: Lady Zebras rout Sequoyah, 8-1

CLAREMORE — For the second-straight year, the Claremore Lady Zebras are back in the championship of the Zebra Shootout.

Claremore’s 8-1 win over Sequoyah set up a showdown with Metro Christian Saturday night for the title.

The Class 5A No. 10-ranked Lady Zebras capped off their week, dropping a pair of perennial powerhouse Class 4A programs — No. 1 Verdigris and No. 3 Sequoyah.

After opening the Shootout with a huge win over Class 6A Bixby, the Lady Zebras dominated Sequoyah from start to finish.

Claremore (4-1) rode the senior leadership of midfielder Katelin Teter and defenders Jentry Cruce, Anna McGuire and Emily Parkinson for the decisive victory against their Rogers County rival.

Jordan Pettay tallied the first two goals for Claremore early in the opening half to put the Lady Zebras up 2-0.

Moments later, sophomore forward Taylor Williams drove a shot past the Sequoyah goalkeeper following a 20-yard pass from sophomore defender Chandler Payne.

The deficit grew to 4-0 as Olivia Maulsby converted the unassisted goal, weaving her way through Sequoyah’s defense.

With Claremore enjoying a comfortable lead and taking the pressure off sophomore goalkeeper Brylee Brasher, the Lady Zebras continued to light up the scoreboard in the second half.

Paige Noe fought through the pressure of Lynzie Moniz and fired a shot past the Sequoyah goalkeeper to make it 5-0.

Parkinson got in the score column with a unassisted goal to extend the margin to 6-0.

After Teter’s unassisted goal from inside the penalty box, Dailey Thomas capped off the Claremore scoring to make it 8-0.

Sequoyah’s lone goal came on an aggressive shot from senior forward Tana Dake, who scorched the ball past backup goalkeeper Courtney Caldwell to make the score 8-1.
