BASEBALL: Verdigris’ Hammack strikes out 15 in win over Dewey

VERDIGRIS — Mitch Hammack used a blazing fast ball to strike out 15 Dewey hitters and carry the Verdigris Cardinals to a 7-1 high school baseball victory over the Bulldoggers on Monday.

Hammack surrendered five hits and did not walk a batter as Verdigris improved to 12-2 for the season. Led by Kale Keith’s two base hits, the Cardinals also cracked five singles, but thrived on 10 bases on balls issued by Dewey pitchers Chase Carver, Cody Wade and Michael McCurdy.

The Cardinals jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning after Keith led off with a single and scored on a hit over the shortstop’s head by catcher Riley Ketzor.

Verdigris put the game away with five runs in the second inning on just one hit. The Cards sent 10 men to the plate and scored all five runs with two outs.

Carver walked the bases full, then Peyton Battenfield stepped up to punch a single past second base and drive in Reece Phillips for a 2-0 lead. Carver followed up with three consecutive walks to bring home Gabe Brown, Keith and Battenfield, giving the home team a 6-0 lead.

Thanks to a pair of Dewey errors, Verdigris managed another run in the fifth. Fielding mistakes help put Phillips at third and Keith’s sacrifice fly scored Phillips with the Cardinals seventh and final run.

Despite Hammack’s heat, Verdigris gave up a run in the sixth. Senior Trenton Keene singled with a throwing error moving him to second. Carson LaRue doubled to the left fence, scoring Keene and ruining Hammack‘s shutout.

The Cardinals return to action Thursday through Saturday in the Adair Tournament.

Times and teams have yet to be determined.
