OU softball duo takes gold medal at Pan-Ams Qualifier

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s Lauren Chamberlain and Destinee Martinez capped their summers with the 2013 USA Softball Women’s National Team by winning gold medals at the Pan American Games Qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The win wrapped up a summer that saw Team USA take silver at the World Cup of Softball and bronze at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International.

Sunday’s win at the Pan-Ams has qualified the U.S. for both the Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 10-26, 2015, and the International Softball Federation World Championships, Aug. 15-24, 2014.

Chamberlain and Martinez were both instrumental in Team USA’s sweep through the Pan-Am Qualifying Stage, which culminated in an 8-1, five-inning triumph over Canada in the Gold Medal Game.

Chamberlain hit .423 (11-26) with two home runs and 13 runs batted in. In addition, she scored eight runs and walked six times with a pair of stolen bases. Martinez, meanwhile, batted .375 (6-16) and scored 10 runs. She added four RBI and four walks with a stolen base.

A two-run, pinch hit home run in a 7-0 win over Argentina on Aug. 14 was Chamberlain’s first homer of the tournament, while she followed that up the next day by going 2-2 with two runs, three RBI and another homer in a 12-0 victory against the Virgin Islands on Aug. 15.

Martinez enjoyed a 2-2 effort with two runs scored in a tournament opening 16-0 win over Aruba on Aug. 10, and also scored three runs against Colombia in a 12-0 victory on Aug. 13.
