The No. 14-ranked Northeastern State men’s soccer team wrapped up its exhibition campaign with a convincing 13-2 victory over Bacone College Thursday night at DeLoache Field.
The RiverHawks were coming off two losses in exhibition play and picked up a win on the strength of hat tricks from three players.
Sophomore forward Joel Mendoza, sophomore midfielder Paul Samia and freshman forward Roberto Soares each found the back of the net three times. Soares even had time to collect an assist.
Others to score in the match were senior midfielders Juan Gonzalez and Edgar Gonzaga, junior forward Jordan Schmoker and junior defender Eric Crawford. Junior midfielder Josue Morales and freshman midfielder Jonathan Guzman also added two assists.
“After our first two matches, this was a great way to close out the exhibition season,” NSU coach Rob Czlonka said. “We only scored once in our first two matches, and I’m happy a lot of guys were able to get touches and get some confidence heading into the beginning of the regular season.”
NSU outshot the visitors 40-5, dominating possession for the majority of the contest. The home side also held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Shephard played the first 45 minutes and recorded one save. Redshirt freshman Jackson Biles finished the game and did not record a save. Both conceded a goal.
BC’s Erick Medina’s finished with 12 saves and 13 goals allowed.
Northeastern State will now prepare for the beginning of the regular season, which is set to kickoff at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 with a road contest at William Jewell College.
