CLAREMORE — The Rogers State men’s soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 loss to Southern Nazarene (Okla.) at Soldier Field in Claremore, Okla. on Tuesday evening.
The Hillcats controlled the tempo of play for much of the game and squandered away several scoring opportunities throughout the contest. RSU blasted 24 shots on the night while the Crimson Storm tallied 15 shots.
RSU put seven shots on frame but the team’s best chances in the second half came when Niall Masterson fired a shot off the post and Necas Collins missed a wide open goal from close range, sailing the ball over the crossbar.
The Crimson Storm goal came in the 63rd minute of play as Edgar Pineda and Blake Rodgers strung together a couple passes, sending the ball to Josh Thomas’ feet where he buried it in the back of the net.
RSU dominated the second stanza taking 17 shots in the half but could not find the back of the net. Freshman Joey Arnold was tagged with the loss in his debut, making four saves while allowing one goal.
This marks only the second time in the Hillcats seven-year history that the team has dropped the regular season opener.
Rogers State (0-1) will return to action on September 14 as the team travels to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on Ouachita Baptist at 4 p.m.
