Hillcats hold off St. Gregory's, 79-69

SHAWNEE — In its final regular season road game, the Rogers State men’s basketball team registered a 79-69 win over St. Gregory’s on Wednesday night at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.



The Hillcats were fueled by the offensive efforts of Ken Holdman and Robinson Odoch Opong. Holdman poured in 23 points with 16 points in the second stanza while Opong was on his heels with 22 points, including six three pointers.



SGU opened the second stanza with consecutive buckets to cut the RSU lead to three points before Holdman took over, tallying nine-straight points for the Cats capped off with 15-foot jumper from the left elbow. The RSU lead swelled to 16 points with nine minutes to play after a three-pointer by freshman J.C. Hartzler. The Hillcats held a double digit lead for most of the second stanza as SGU cut the deficit to eight points but never got any closer to the lead.



The Cavaliers opened the game with a 4-0 run but the Hillcats answered with a 14-0 run capped off with a jumper by Opong. The Cavaliers battled back with an 11-3 spurt to trail by two with less than 10 minutes to play in the half. RSU clung to the lead the rest of the half and took a 40-32 lead into the locker room at the break. Opong registered 14 first half points to lead all scorers.



The Hillcats shot 50-percent from behind the arc and 46- percent from the field.



Fayzon Richey led the Cavs with 21 points and Brock Vorwald added 15 points. The Cavs won the battle on the boards 42-27.



Rogers State (20-9, 8-7) concludes the regular season on Saturday as the Hillcats host Oklahoma City at 5 p.m. inside the Claremore Expo. The Hillcats will honor the six men’s basketball seniors in their final game at the Claremore Expo prior to tipoff.
