HALO CLASSIC: No. 5 Hillcats defeat No. 7 Our Lady of the Lake

SAN ANTONIO — For the second time this week, NAIA No. 5-ranked Rogers State bested a NAIA Top 25 squad this time defeating No. 7 Our Lady of the Lake 85-77 Friday night inside Mabee Gymnasium in day one of the Halo Classic Presented by Drury Inn.

A back and forth first half saw four ties and six lead changes  as RSU didn’t secure the lead until 3:11remaining as Kendrell Thompson found Donald Williams for his third 3-pointer of the evening. The trey kick-started a 10-3 run to put the Cats up 46-37 at the intermission. RSU wouldn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.

Justynn Hammond knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 6:47 remaining in the game to stretch the RSU lead to 18 points. The Hillcats slow played the Saints as OLLU outscored RSU 15-5 for the remainder of the game.

The Hillcats coming off a victory over No. 16 MidAmerica Nazarene Tuesday evening shot 70 percent from behind the arc versus OLLU while knocking down 64.6 percent from the field. RSU missed just four shots from the charity stripe hitting 80 percent.

OLLU tallied 14 steals forcing RSU into 27 turnovers. RSU out-rebounded the Saints 37-28, led by senior center Brian Gibson pulling in eight boards in his first action of the season.

Williams led all-scorers with 26 points hitting five 3-pointers while shooting 82 percent from the field for the Cats. Thompson finished with 20 points, 18 coming in the first half. Ken Holdman added 12 points along with Alex Ewings finishing with 11.

Robert Martinez led the Saints with 23 points as OLLU shot 11-of-33 from behind the arc. Lo’Ron Smith totaled nine points in the first half but finished with just 12 points for the game.

Rogers State (5-0) will close out the Halo Classic facing University of St. Thomas Saturday at 12 p.m. inside Mabee Gymnasium. Live audio streaming will be provided at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
