Stillwater Sports Minute: Gundy talks strength of Big 12

STILLWATER — With three teams in the top four of the BCS, it’s easy to see why the SEC is known as the powerhouse of college football.

But as dominate as the SEC has been this year, another conference has been flying a little under the radar.

The Big 12 has a total of nine teams that are bowl eligible — including Oklahoma State. And with the bowl season quickly approaching, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is excited to see just how the Big 12 stacks up against the likes of the Pac-12, ACC and even the powerhouse SEC.

“In my opinion, you have the SEC that has a lot of teams in the top 10 in the country, which is very impressive,” Gundy said. “Then there’s some fall off between some of the other teams, in some people’s opinions. In this league, you have a couple that are way up there, and then you have the rest of the pack for the most part that we’ll find out during bowl season if the offenses are as good as people say they are. I’m excited about that part of it to find out if we’re really good on offense in this league, which I think we are because I watch it, or we’re not really good on offense in this league and we have a long ways to go to catch up, which makes for a great discussion.”

But before the Cowboys look ahead to the bowl season, they will first have one last chance to sharpen that offense when they travel to Baylor Saturday.

“It’s another week in the Big 12,” Gundy said. “(It) should be an exciting game and I’m looking forward to a week of preparation and traveling down to play Saturday morning in Waco.”
