Battenfield, O’Dell spark Verdigris to clean sweep over Inola

INOLA — Blake Battenfield tallied 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as Verdigris dropped Inola, 63-56 Tuesday night in Will Rogers Conference action.

The win over Inola improved Verdigris to 2-0 on the season.

Verdigris, who led 42-36 after the third quarter, converted 21-of-24 free throws in the final eight minutes to beat the Longhorns.

Early in the second quarter, Inola (0-1) pushed its lead to 20-12 on Travis Hall’s mid-range jumper with 5:08 left until halftime.

From that point on, though, it was all Verdigris.

Tyler Hundley’s presence in the paint kick-started Verdigris’ offense on a 12-0 scoring run.

Leonard Brockup’s three-pointer, followed by Chase Bryant’s jumper trimmed Inola’s lead to 22-21 with 2:03 remaining in the second quarter.

One play later, Hundley put Verdigris ahead for good at 23-22 on a basket inside from Tyler Monroe.

Hundley scored all nine of his points in the second quarter as Verdigris led 28-22 at halftime.

Hundley and Battenfield combined for 17 points in the first 16 minutes.

Hall tallied seven of his team-high 20 points in the first half to lead Inola.

In the third quarter, Cade Upshaw’s three-pointer with 4:59 remaining extended Verdigris’ lead to 33-24.

The lead grew to double digits at 35-25 on Monroe’s 1-of-2 free throws.

After Brockup’s technical foul, in which Hall converted a pair of free throws, Inola pulled back into the game at 35-31.

Hall got Inola within three points at 39-36 with 56 seconds left in the third quarter, but Battenfield drained a trey at the buzzer to put Verdigris ahead 42-36.

Along with Battenfield, Upshaw tallied 17 points and Hundley had nine. Monroe also contributed with eight points.

Mootry joined Hall in double figures for Inola with 10 points.

In the girls’ game, Verdigris junior guard Baileigh O’Dell and sophomore post Courtney Risenhoover scored 17 points each to lead the Lady Cardinals past Inola, 55-34.

Verdigris (2-0) led 18-8 after the first quarter and 33-20 at halftime.

Risenhoover had 10 of her 17 points in the first half; while O’Dell tallied nine in the first two quarters.

Back-to-back baskets from Camry Collins put Verdigris ahead 27-12 with 3:53 remaining in the first half.

Then, with 4:57 left in the third quarter, Risenhoover buried a wide-open trey to increase the Verdigris lead to 38-26.

A pair of free throw conversions by O’Dell put Verdigris up 46-26.

Lauren McDaniel led Inola (0-1) with nine points.
