BIXBY TOURNEY: Zebras drop pair, still seek first win

BIXBY — The Claremore Zebras remained winless after back-to-back losses in the Bixby Tournament.

Claremore (0-4) couldn’t contain East Central’s fast-pace offense and suffered its fourth loss of the season, falling 53-28 Friday morning in the loser’s bracket at Whitey Ford Sports Complex.

East Central led 16-8 after the first quarter and managed to outscore Claremore, 37-20 over the final three quarters to seal the victory.

Hunter Garroutte led the Zebras in scoring with six points, while Spencer Walden had five and Daniel Lauer finished had four.

Stanvon Taylor, who is committed to Oklahoma for football and the 2012 Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year, led the Cardinals with 13 points.

Claremore faced Springdale (Ark.) Har-Ber in the loser’s bracket consolation Saturday morning.

In the tournament opener, Putnam City exploded for 49 first half points and cruised past Claremore, 74-30.

Lauer led the Zebras in scoring with 10 points, while Brett Russell added five. Darius Murphy, Caleb Webster, Dylan Landers, Caleb McGaughan, Tate Casey and Garroutte also contributed with two points each.

Ronnie Boyce led Putnam City with 12 points.

    Meranda Golbek and Sarah Szcinski, a pair of 2014 Claremore High School graduates, earned All-State honors for their athletic training careers and will join two other student trainers from Jenks and Stillwater High School on the East squad.
