SAC WOMEN'S BB: No. 2 LCU rolls past USAO, 86-54


CHICKASHA — No.2 Lubbock Christian University returned to true form Saturday inside USAO Fieldhouse, as Kelsey Canavan led four Lady Chaparrals scorers in double figures with 16 points and LCU was 52.3% from the field en route to an 86-54 Sooner Athletic Conference road win over University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma.

The Lady Chaps exploded with 46 points in the first half, with Nicole Hampton scoring all 15 of her points in the first half. They would end the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 46-22 advantage into the break. LCU was cold from beyond the arch going 5-of-18 (27.8%) with two three-pointers coming from Haley Burton.

LCU explored their bench in the second half as they produced 21 bench points with 10 different Lady Chaps entering the scoring column. They led as much as 42 points with 3:31 remaining (80-38)  before settling for the 32-point win. LCU held USAO without a field goal for the first six minutes of the second half and held them to just two field goals over the first 10 minutes of the half. USAO made seven three-pointers in the second half and was held to just two field goals inside the arch. Those field goals were scored inside the final 3:26 in the game.

Canavan led all scorers with 16 points and came close to a double-double as she pulled in nine rebounds. She was one of four Lady Chaps in double figures, as Nicole Hampton finished with 15 points and Haley Burton and Emily Atkins each had 13 points. USAO had no player reach double digit scoring as Lubbock native Krista Ford led them with nine points.  LCU used a 21-15 turnover advantage to outscore USAO 37-7 in points off turnovers.  They also had 10 offensive rebounds for a 16-3 scoring advantage in second chance scoring.

LCU improved to 5-1 in SAC play and are sitting in second place in conference after falling to Oklahoma City giving them one loss. LCU is 18-1 overall.  USAO is 9-9 overall and still without a win in SAC play (0-6).  The Lady Chaps will return home for a two-game week facing John Brown University on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. and Rogers State University on Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
