Ex-Zebra duo, Cardinal ready to hit diamond for Independence CC

Former Claremore All-State OF Seifried competing for playing time at MACU

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — A pair of former Claremore Zebra baseball players — Travis Teague and Brenton Washausen — will open the 2013 season for the Independence Community College Pirates on Tuesday afternoon in Hesston, Kan.

Along with Teague and Washausen, former Verdigris first baseman Denham Morton and Catoosa’s Matt Shepard are competing for playing time at Independence.

Teague (5-11, 170) is entering his second season on the mound for the Pirates.

The left-handed hurler helped lead the Claremore Zebras to the Class 5A state playoffs in 2010.

Washausen (5-10, 190) was the Zebras’ main-stay at third base for the past four seasons.

Earning All-State honors in 2012, Washausen sparked the Zebras to the Class 5A state finals and produced an explosive bat in the No. 3 hole in the lineup.

Washausen, in his first year of junior college baseball, is battling for time in the Pirates’ infield.

Morton (6-1, 195) powered the Verdigris Cardinals to back-to-back Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012.

He is expected to compete for playing time at first base for the Pirates.

The Pirates’ first home game in Independence, Kan., is Feb. 9 against NOC-Tonkawa at 1 p.m.

* J.P. Seifried, a 5A All-State outfielder in 2012 for the Zebras, is playing  in the infield for Mid-America Christian University. The Evangels dropped their opener, 3-0, to Texas Wesleyan.
